The People and Values Behind Lotus Dream Spa

This article isn’t about massage techniques, beautiful treatment rooms or special offers. It’s about the people who make Lotus Dream Spa the family spa that it is.

When guests visit us, they often comment on how warm and genuine the atmosphere feels. We’d like to think that’s because authentic Khmer hospitality begins long before a massage starts. It begins with the people who welcome you.

Our Story

I first came to Cambodia as a volunteer English teacher at my mum’s school and quickly fell in love with the country, its people and its culture. That unexpected journey eventually led to the creation of Lotus Dream Spa. Smiling therapists from Lotus Dream Spa enjoying a traditional Khmer meal together after work in Siem Reap.

Lotus Dream Spa first opened over fifteen years ago to help support a free English language school founded by my mum for children from poorer families in Cambodia. All profit from the spa originally went towards running the school. Although the school has now closed, the values that shaped those early years have never really left us.

Today the spa is run by my wife Navi and me. We each bring something different. I’m often focused on giving every guest the best, most authentic Cambodian massage experience we can provide. Navi, having worked as a therapist herself, naturally understands the challenges of the job and is often the first to notice when one of the team needs support. Between us we’ve found a balance that feels right.

Looking After Our Team

We’ve always believed that looking after our team is one of the best ways to look after our guests.

Our therapists are paid well, earn commission on every treatment, and keep 100% of any tips they receive. Although tips are never expected, they are always genuinely appreciated, and every tip goes directly to the therapist.

Looking after our team goes far beyond wages and commission. It also means helping when life becomes difficult. Over the years we’ve supported members of our team through pregnancies, family situations and other personal challenges whenever we’ve been able. Like any family, we’ve celebrated happy times together and supported each other through more difficult ones.

Several of our therapists have been with us for well over a decade. Some have been with us for fourteen years. Others joined with little or no experience and have grown into excellent therapists through training, practice and dedication.

Although everyone learns the same core Khmer massage techniques, each therapist gradually develops their own style and personality. Massage is a very personal experience and many returning guests find someone they really connect with.

Friendships That Grow Over Time A happy couple with their Lotus Dream Spa therapists after enjoying their massage in Siem Reap.

One couple who visit Siem Reap regularly have been returning to the spa for many years. They always ask for the same two therapists. Over time they have become much more than regular customers, bringing gifts for the team and building genuine friendships.

Experiences like that can’t be created through marketing. They grow naturally through trust, consistency and kindness.

Something you’ll never see outside Lotus Dream Spa is our therapists standing on the street trying to persuade people to come inside. We’ve never felt comfortable asking them to do that. We’d much rather they spend their energy doing what they do best: welcoming guests with warmth and providing wonderful treatments.

More Than a Massage

Families often tell us how much attention their children receive while visiting. That’s simply part of Cambodian culture. Cambodian people genuinely love children, and that warmth often shines through without anyone trying.

When guests leave after a treatment, you can often see the difference. Their shoulders seem lower, they walk a little slower and there’s a relaxed smile on their face.

Those are the moments we love most. We hope that, for an hour or two, they’ve been able to forget about the outside world and simply enjoy being looked after.

This isn’t a claim that we’re perfect. Like every family business, we’re always learning. But if there’s one thing we hope people remember about Lotus Dream Spa, it’s that behind every treatment is a team of people who genuinely care about what they do, about each other, and about every guest who walks through our door.

And Then There’s Oreo

Oreo is a friendly street cat who adopted us several years ago. Although he’s not allowed inside the spa, you’ll often find him relaxing near the entrance, greeting familiar faces and making himself at home. orio lotus dream spa welcome2.jpg

He doesn’t contribute much to the day-to-day running of the business, but he has become a much-loved part of the Lotus Dream Spa family.
